2022 QLD Smoke Alarm Legislation Changes
From 1 January 2022, changes will apply to the QLD smoke alarm legislation in all domestic dwellings being leased or sold. This is something all renters, landlords, home buyers / sellers will have to get done.
If you are planning to lease, sell or buy a home in the next few years, make sure your smoke alarms comply with the new legislation. The new legislation outlines the types of alarms and how they are installed is optimal for giving you an early warning and the chance to escape.
The 2022 legislation changes include:

Smoke alarms must be interconnected - when one goes off, they all go off, giving everyone extra time to escape.

A smoke alarm must be installed in each bedroom, hallway and on every floor.

Smoke alarms must be photoelectric (and comply with Australian Standard 3786-2014) and must be either hardwired or have a non-removable 10 year lithium battery.

Smoke alarms more than 10 years old must be replaced

Faulty smoke alarms must be replaced immediately

Owner-occupiers of existing properties have until 1 January 2027 to comply to the new legislation.
